University's poet in residence plans to retire in June 1

The head of the Department of Languages and Literature will retire in June after 33 years with the University.

David Middleton, who received his baccalaureate degree in English from Louisiana Technical College in 1971 and his Master of Arts degree from Louisiana State University in 1973, first joined the Nicholls faculty in 1977 as a temporary staff member while his wife Fran worked in the University library.

We were looking forward to attending the spring speech forum, originally scheduled for Tuesday, but the department of mass communication canceled the event because no one applied to speak for the con side.

That might have something to do with the forum's proposed topic: Resolved, that the state of Louisiana should legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes only.

The Provost Search Committee recently narrowed its selection down from five candidates to two: Ihassan Alkadi and NSU's Lisa Abney.

Abney is the current acting provost and vice president of Academic and Student Affairs.

She temporarily replaced Thomas Hanson, who stepped down during the summer after serving in the position for more than four years.
