Santa Claus is coming to Stopher Gym for a toy drive

Nicholls' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in association with the Lafourche Parish Government will host Colonel Kringle- a toy drive assisting local families in need this holiday season. Jolly Old St. Nick, also known as Santa Clause, will be making a special stop at tomorrow's men's basketball game vs. Loyola to collect unwrapped toys for those in need in exchange for a free photo with Santa and some of his helpers.

Search committee narrows down applicants

After receiving over 40 applications for the head coaching vacancy, the search committee has agreed upon 10 finalist and has conducted phone interviews, announced the Nicholls Athletics Department. "We as the search committee were very pleased with the amount of qualified applicants for the position, and believe that we have narrowed it down to the best 10 candidates," said Jason Dagate, search committee chairman.

University hires new head football coach

The Nicholls Athletic Department announced the new head coach of the Colonel football team on Tuesday afternoon. Former University of Central Missouri offensive coordinator Charlie Stubbs will bring his 31 years of coaching experience to Nicholls, pending approval by the University of Louisiana System, where he will be the ninth coach in program history.

Nicholls State assistant football coach Kent Keith has been named interim head coach, and a search committee has been formed to select the next head coach of the football program, the University Athletic Department announced today. The 2009 season was Keith's third overseeing the Colonels' wide receivers.

Colonel football captures first conference win of season

Twenty-one seniors suited up for their last home game in a Colonel uniform Saturday when they took a 28-21 victory over the Demons of Northwestern State University. The seniors were honored before the game for their hard work and dedication to the team. Volleyball clinches spot in tournament after going 1-1

Nicholls women's volleyball team clinched a spot in the Southland Conference tournament with a 3-2 win over McNeese State University Friday night. The Colonels, needing just one win to secure a spot in the tournament, slugged it out with the Cowgirls. The game went five sets, and the Colonels prevailed.

Senior volleyball players say goodbye to their last season

After practices are over and the season winds down, four Colonel volleyball players will say goodbye while the rest of the team looks toward next season and early mornings of weight training. The seniors of this 2009 season will suit up in their last competition of the year-the conference tournament.

Nicholls State University officials announced today that head football coach Jay Thomas will be released from his duties effective Nov. 27. Thomas finished the 2009 season on a winning note as the Colonels defeated in-state rival Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday night in Hammond.

Opinion: Men's basketball record does not reflect team's talent

Some might think a 3-9 record to start a season in any sport indicates a bad team that will win some games but not make it anywhere; however, the Colonels men's basketball team does not fit into this description. The Southland Conference has a variety of talented teams from Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas; however, these teams are not the Tigers of LSU, Longhorns of Texas or the Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas.

From worst to first; men's basketball picked to finish on top

The men's basketball team went from worst to first when the team was picked pre-season to finish first in the Southland Conference after last season's last place prediction. Last season the Colonels proved the critics wrong when they went 20-11 overall record, 12-4 in conference placing and a second place seed in the tournament.

Captain America returned to his winning ways at the Ultimate Fighting Championship 105 in England after his unanimous decision over Brandon Vera Saturday night. Randy Couture, also known as Captain America, used his signature dirty boxing to win the judges' scores.

Cross country makes successful campaign

WACO, Texas - The Nicholls State University women's cross country team capped off its most successful campaign in school history Saturday by placing 12th out of 24 teams in the 2009 NCAA South Central Regional Cross Country Championship Meet.
