The women's basketball team continued their struggles in Southland Conference action with a pair of losses against the McNeese State Cowgirls and the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. The Colonels pulled within one in the final two minutes but could not climb over the hump against the Cowgirls, falling 54-52.
As many Louisianans are looking forward to Feb. 7 as the day the Saints go to the Superbowl, the Colonels men's basketball team are looking to bounce back after ending their home-court winning streak Saturday. With a 19-point loss to Southeastern Louisiana in Stopher Gym, the Colonels came exactly eight days short of having a loss-free home-court advantage.
Women's basketball junior guard Ricshanda Bickham is trying to bring her success from the junior college level to the Colonels as she continues to score in large helpings. Bickham is majoring in mass communication at Nicholls after transferring from Conners State College in Oklahoma.
Statistically, 700 kids will be drafted and only 50 will make it to the Major Leagues; however, former Nicholls alumnus and baseball walk-on defied the odds and made it, even though his high school did not have a team. Former major leaguer and Nicholls alumnus Darryl Hamilton was the key note speaker at the First Pitch banquet on Saturday and pointed out the biggest difference, besides field conditions and upgrades, between when he played baseball for Nicholls and now.
Though most Olympic events are physically demanding, curling seems to be out of place when it comes to competition. The sport of curling seems to be very simple: slide a big heavy rock across a sheet of ice and try to land it inside a target. The closest one to the center of the target wins.
